Nicky Robie
Born and raised in Belgium, Nicky’s interest in languages brought her to the Ohio State University, where she earned a Ph.D. in Spanish Language and Literature in 1993. Having grown up surrounded by the art of the old masters in Antwerp, the city of Peter Paul Rubens, and a great variety of traditional and contemporary art that is prevalent in her native city, she became more interested in abstract art when she met and started working at the Clintonville studio of Yoshiaki Yoshinari, a Japanese abstract artist.
Nicky is an intuitive, mostly self-taught painter, with an interest in abstract mixed media painting. Some of her works are entirely non-representational, while others are semi-abstract with recognizable images. Many of her pieces have heavy palette knife work and bright, rich colors. Mark making, collage, many textures, and layers are also common in her pieces. Her intuitive process, especially in her non-representational work, unfolds without preconceived plans or sources.
In 2018, she became a resident artist at the High Road Gallery and Studios in Worthington, where she has participated in various group shows. Her work has been seen in the community as well including at the North Oak Gallery in Clintonville, Igloo letterpress, and Random Precision Brewery in Worthington, and Upper Cup coffee shop in Gahanna. She recently participated in the Spring show of the Dublin Area Art League.
Her works are in the homes of collectors in Ohio, Europe, and Japan.
